Caritas Moroto Diocese (CMD) previously referred to as Social Services and Development/SSD is the social development arm of Moroto Catholic Diocese. The Department was created in 1981 as a technical arm of Moroto Diocese with the purpose of distributing relief food in the Diocese following the prolonged drought and subsequent famine that struck the whole region of Karamoja and killed thousands of people. During the relief emergency period, SSD (Caritas) was mandated to oversee all the diocesan agricultural projects and development programs.
It was at that time that the Diocese of Moroto established the tractor schemes of Namalu, Iriiri, Morulem and Karenga parishes to ensure enhancement of food security. The Diocesan development arm has since transitioned interventions from emergency response to development work. However, the diocese still encounters some emergency needs e.g. relief food distribution during lean season and response to disease outbreaks like Ebola, cholera and COVID-19. Our current programs are in the five districts of Moroto, Napak, Nabilatuk, Nakapiripirit and Amudat.
Dignified, peaceful and self-reliant communities of Moroto Diocese.
To build the capacity of vulnerable households in order to ensure their sustainable livelihoods and human development guided by love, respect and commitment.
